Alexander Ovechkin seemed to fall off a bit last season.

With Sidney Crosby taking the Rocket Richard trophy and all the young guns taking over the headlines all season, it started to seem like the Great 8’s reign over goal scoring in the NHL had come to an end. Well, he shut up all those theories pretty quickly this season, scoring two hat tricks and seven goals in his first two games of the season.

Now, he leads the league in both goals and points this season and is on pace to score a ridiculous 287 goals. Of course, that’s not going to happen, but he could be in for one of the best seasons of his career.

Regardless of what happens from here until the end of the season, these two games were rare enough that combined with Ovi’s history, they helped make some history.

Here are 7 unbelievable stats to come from Ovi’s hot start:

Kuznetsov assists

1st Hat tricks in consecutive periods since 1976

First player in 100 years to start season with hat tricks in two straight games

Most hat tricks since 1993-94
