There are some plays in sports that just make you scratch your head and wonder "what on earth was that athlete thinking" while he/she committed a foolish play.

During a NCAA Division I women’s basketball game between the Northwestern Wildcats and Rutgers Scarlet Knights last night, Northwestern guard Ashley Deary was dribbling the ball up the court until she decided to take a few seconds to tie her shoe. That was all the time her Rutgers opponent needed to interrupt the process and steal the ball away.

Deary was clearly in an awkward position. She had to do her laces up and evidently did not want to burn one of her team’s timeouts. But wouldn’t it have been worth? Could she not have just dribbled a little further and passed the ball off to one of her teammates?

Regardless, that one is likely going to stick with the guard for the rest of her career. However, it’s not like she’s the only player in the sport’s history to commit a puzzling turnover. Here’s a look at a couple of other notable ones.

The play turned out to be meaningless, as Northwestern went on to win by a score of 60-38. Hopefully Deary learned her lesson, though, and makes sure her shoes are double-knotted in her next outing.
