You’ve probably never heard of the Australian Ice Hockey League before, but it’s been around since the year 2000 and features 8 different teams.
Since it’s currently winter over in Australia, the 2017 AIHL season is well underway as teams have already played anywhere from 20-24 regular season games.
On Sunday, the Melbourne Ice and Sydney Ice Dogs went head-to-head and it got really chippy by the end of things. With first-place Melbourne leading 4-2 late in the third period, Sydney’s David Dunwoodie made an attempt to clear the puck out of the zone but ended up getting taken out by Joseph Hughes. That’s when the chaos started.
Clearly frustrated with the game and what had just happened behind the net, Dunwoodie took exception and dropped the gloves with Hughes as the two exchanged some massive blows. However, there was one shot delivered by Hughes during the fight that has people talking and that’s the elbow he threw to Dunwoodie’s back while he had him tied up.
It’s not everyday you see a hockey player throw an elbow like that during a scrap, but at least he didn’t take a vicious shot at Dunwoodie’s head while he had him in that position.
Dunwoodie received a 20-minute game misconduct and a five-minute fighting major on the play, while Hughes was given a 25-minute match penalty and a two minute penalty for the original elbow that started the bout.
Dunwoodie leads the entire Australian Ice Hockey League in penalty minutes with 137, with the next closest player sitting at 80 penalty minutes. As for Hughes, he sits fifth in the league with 61 penalty minutes.
