Throwing hundreds of dollars down on jerseys can be a risky purchase.

The turnover on sports teams can limit fans to which player they chose to invest their hard-earned dollars into.

Do you go for a high draft pick, a player that just signed a long-term contract or do you be that guy that bought a jersey of a player that was acquired at the trade deadline who’ll likely sign elsewhere in the offseason because you’d likely be one of the few fans with that particular one?

Meet Stephen, a Buffalo Bills fan who just purchased a new Sammy Watkins jersey this afternoon. A proud member of #BillsMafia who goes by the Twitter handle @postmalowens, Stephen tweeted out a picture of his new digs.

There was just one problem: the Bills had announced the trade of Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams just five minutes prior to Stephen’s tweet. Check out the timestamp in the tweets below.

Feeling crushed about the news, Stephen tweeted the Bills asking for some assistance.

Let’s just hope that Stephen kept the receipt.  But by the looks of it, it appears to be a counterfeit jersey, so he might be hard-pressed to return it.

Stephen started trending on Twitter, and as you could imagine, the internet had a field day with this one.

We sympathize with Stephen, because, well, he’s a suffering Bills fan, but also because he fell victim to thinking he was safe in buying Watkins’ jersey with a player that he thought was a long-term staple in Bills organization.

As of Friday afternoon, authentic Watkins’ jerseys can still be bought on NFLShop.com for a cool $294.99 USD. Had he bought a real jersey, maybe the Bills would feel inclined to help the poor guy out.
