The New England Patriots are no strangers when it comes to controversy. Football fans have long accused the team as cheaters for their infamous Spygate and Deflategate tactics.

During the second half of the Super Bowl 51 rematch between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots at Foxboro on Sunday night, a mysterious amount of fog rolled into the stadium, which of course prompted Twitter to have a field day.

The conspiracy theorists had some fun believing that the Patriots and Bill Belichick is able to control the weather.

Not all the humor was directed towards the Pats.

Imagine being in the broadcast booth trying to decipher which player made a tackle, or who the ball was thrown to. That was the reality for those calling the game.

With Halloween just around the corner, the weather was rather appropriate. But it makes you wonder: where fog machines actually used? Of course not, but there’s no fun in downplaying that. One Craigslist user posted a hilarious add saying he had 328 fog machines available in the Foxborough area, which contain the same digits from the Falcons blown Super Bowl lead.

The foggy conditions made for an unusual setting, to which the Patriots prevailed. Tom Brady was actually quoted after the game thinking that the bizarre weather was because of fireworks. The real reason for it all? The humidty levels reached 88 percent at kickoff, which caused the fog to stay around well into Monday morning.

This is not the first time a fog has swarmed the stadium. Back on New Year’s Eve in 1998, the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears played a divisional playoff game known as the “Fog Bowl.”
