The morning of September 25, 2016, was a sad one for many baseball fans as news broke that Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez had died early that morning in a boating accident.

For the remainder of the season, fans, teammates and players from around the league paid tribute to the 24-year-old pitcher in many different ways, and the start of this season was no different.

On Monday, the Miami Marlins opened up their season against the Washington Nationals. One of Fernandez’s best friends on the team, Dee Gordon, honoured his friend with some custom-made cleats.

Gordon shared the photo on his Instagram account on Sunday, and posted a heartfelt message with the picture.

“I truly appreciate @emays12 and @uabaseball for surprising me and making my customs this year truly special…I am truly blown away by these shoes and every pair I get to wear this year…thank you guys so much for this genuine act of kindness helping me remember my teammate. #JDF16 #OpeningDay”

We have seen a lot of custom cleats over the past few years, but these are simply some of the best we have ever come across.
