Buzzer beaters, late goals and walk-off home runs are just a few examples of awful ways to lose a championship.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, who are playing in the National Championship again Monday night on TSN, know all about that.

As crushing as defeats like that are, though, they don't compare to what happened to Lexi Thompson during the LPGA's first Major, the ANA Inspiration, on Sunday.

During the final round, Thompson was informed by an LPGA rules official that a viewer emailed in an apparent rules violation that happened on Saturday.

Thompson, who was comfortably in the lead before being informed of the violation, was deducted four strokes for the violation.

Unfortunately for Lexi, it wasn't a joke, but she somehow managed to battle back and force a playoff, only to lose to So Yeon Ryu.

As the incident unfolded, pro golfers and fans alike took to Twitter to share their frustrations with what occurred, and it's important to note that most didn't disagree with the ruling, but they did have a problem with a viewer determining the outcome:

Lexi not only lost what would have been her second career Major win, but she also lost nearly $200,000, too, as she made $250,000 rather than $405,000 for finishing in second.

After the incident, Lexi took to Instagram to share her feelings on what happened.

Although what happened was extremely unfortunate, Thompson now has more fans rallying behind her than ever and we know she'll bounce back.
