Opening night did not go as planned for the Boston Celtics as they lost Gordon Hayward just over five minutes into the 2017-18 season due to a gruesome injury.

The Celtics returned home immediately after Tuesday night’s game as they had to prepare for their home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. Despite being stuck in a hospital bed as he awaits surgery on his leg, Hayward still managed to record a video for the fans and delivered a special message to them ahead of the home opener.

The video was played on the jumbotron ahead of the game and Hayward got a massive ovation from crowd.

The Celtics also put up Gordon Hayward boards on the concourse that fans have been signing all night long.

You never want to see someone suffer an injury, especially one as gruesome as the one Hayward suffered on Tuesday night.

Here’s hoping he’s able to  make a quick and full recovery.
