Ilya Kovalchuk has been in the news this offseason, as it was rumoured that he would be returning to the NHL this season.

After the Devils failed to find a trade partner for him, he decided to sign in Russia for one more season. So, he’s still in Russia training with SKA Saint Petersburg and apparently getting some fishing done in the offseason. In a fitting way to kick off Shark Week, he reeled in a hammerhead shark.

If you’re at all squeamish when trying to hold fish after reeling them in, holding sharks probably isn’t for you.

Kovalchuk was happy to do so, especially after the struggle to bring it in. He mentioned in the comments of his page that it took him approximately 40 minutes to reel it in.

He wasn’t the only athlete to get in on the Shark Week action either. Michael Phelps raced a great white shark in the ocean and it’s fascinating to watch. Click here to watch the full clip.
