Remember the XFL? The league where players rocked a nickname on the back of their jersey rather than their surname? And when the pigskin they tossed was black and red rather than its regular brown? Well, if you were a fan, you might be in luck.

The XFL was launched in 2001 by the WWF and took an unconventionally violent take on football. For example: rather than flipping a coin to determine possession, one player from each team would fight to recover a ball from 20 yards away. The player to come out with the ball would ultimately get to make their choice. Essentially, it was football meets wrestling.

The league folded after just a single season, but could be making a comeback in the near future. According to reports, WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon could be attempting to bring the league back. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported that McMahon’s new entertainment company has started filing trademarks to acquire the name “XFL.”

The exact reason behind McMahon’s pursuit of the trademark has yet to be confirmed, but rumours of his interest in reigniting the league can only lead football and wrestling fans to wonder if it’s to bring it back. In case you forgot about how absolutely insane the XFL was, or are unfamiliar with its history, here’s a look at the some of the best moments from its lone season.

With the NFL cracking down on its on-the-field safety rules, the news seems to be coming at a weird time. In the meantime, fans can only sit tight and see how the next couple of months unfold.
