John Tortorella is a funny person to say the least.

If you need proof of that, just look him up on YouTube, there's a whole top ten dedicated to his best soundbites.

That being said, he's a very serious coach as well, and in hockey there's a time for fun and a time for seriousness.

Friday was a time for fun for the Blue Jackets as they practiced outside in front of fans at Winter Park.

Somebody was missing from the skate, though, and it was none other than Torts who gave a reasonable and funny explanation for his absence.

Last year, Torts suffered two broken ribs after colliding with one of his players during Columbus' outdoor practice.

Clearly he wasn't taking any chances this time around, and that's probably a good decision on his part as Columbus has already surpassed their win total from last season and there's a good chance they'll be playing playoff hockey.

While Torts didn't get to enjoy the outdoors, the players certainly did judging by these pictures.
