For the most part, records are meant to be broken.

Certain achievements such as Wayne Gretzky's all-time points (2,857) record seems unsurpassable, but othesr are constantly changing. Some notable milestones were reached in the NHL tonight by three veterans that will help you appreciate what they have been able to accomplish so far in their respective careers. Here’s a look at what they were able to do.

MOVE ON UP, LU

With his team’s 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres tonight, Roberto Luongo passed Curtis Joseph for sole possession of fourth place on the all-time NHL goaltender’s win list. The victory was the 455th of his career and he now sits only behind Ed Belfour (484), Patrick Roy (551) and Martin Brodeur (691). Luongo is definitely on his back nine, but it’s reasonable to believe he’ll pass Belfour for third place by the end of his career.

MR. 200

Braden Holtby became the second fastest goaltender to reach 200 wins in NHL history after the Washington Capitals defeated their rival Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on home ice. The accomplishment took just 319 games, and the only goaltender to reach it in less contests is former Montreal Canadiens goaltender Ken Dryden. At this pace, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Holtby’s name near Luongo’s on the all-time wins list later in his career.

PATTY CLUTCH

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Patrick Marleau moved his way up on an elite list after he potted home the 101st game-winning goal of his career. The marker tied Jarome Iginla and he now sits behind a notable group of names which includes Jaromir Jagr, Gordie Howe and Teemu Selanne, to name a few. He’s just eight goals away from surpassing his boss, president and alternative governor Brendan Shanahan.

Earlier in the day, Erik Karlsson kicked things off with an impressive milestone of his own. With his assist on Mark stone’s overtime winner earlier this afternoon, Karlsson tied Filip Kuba’s record for the most assists through the Senators first 15 games in franchise history with 14.

Jaromir Jagr is just 60 games away from passing Gordie Howe for sole possession of the all-time games played list, so that’s another one to keep an eye out for, too. As the season progresses, we’re sure others will be achieved, but for now, these players deserve some credit for their recent accomplishments.
