Former Tucson Roadrunners captain Craig Cunningham was forced to retire from hockey earlier than he would have hoped, but he’s just happy to be alive.

The 26-year-old suffered an acute cardiac arrest on the ice before a game last November and had to have his lower left leg amputated due to an infection from circulation problems the following month.

Next season, the Tucson Roadrunners are going to pay tribute to their former captain by retiring his jersey and hosting a bobblehead night in his honour when they play the Iowa Wild on October 27.

Cunningham has been making a nice recovery since he collapsed during the pre-game last November and he’s even returned to the ice since the incident.

The former fourth round NHL draft pick will take on a new role next season as he’ll be working as a pro scout for the Arizona Coyotes and will also help with player development.
