March 18th is a special day in hockey for a very simple reason.  125 years ago today, Lord Stanley introduced the idea of awarding the country's top amateur hockey team with a trophy.

The Stanley Cup is one of the most iconic trophies in sports, and it has a special place in Canada because of Lord Stanley who was the governor general of Canada at the time when he introduced the idea of a trophy.

Add in the fact that the Cup has come home to Canada so many times over the years and it's easy to see why it means so much to everyone in this country, from players to fans.

To honour the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup, the Royal Canadian Mint is producing a limited-edition quarter that every hockey fan will want to add to their collection.

As you can see, the coin clearly celebrates the evolution of the game from 1892 to 2017, and the evolution is in the players featured on the coin.

The inspiration for using two players in such a way probably came from a previous coin made by the Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cup.

The Cup has produced so many incredible moments since it was created, and a commemorative coin is the perfect way to honour all those memories.

Who will add to the history of the Cup this season?
