Sidney Crosby has been connected to the number 87 since the day he was born, August 7, 1987 (8/7/87).

Throughout his NHL career, he has chosen to connect himself to that number as well. His number has always been 87, the longest contract he signed was for $8.7 million and now he added some more stats to the pile last night.

Fitting that the game was against his (somewhat invented) rival, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, Crosby had a four-point game in a crazy 8-7 win. That put Crosby at 988 points all-time and tied for, you guessed it, 87th all time. Now, to wrap that up, a Pittsburgh fan blog made the connection last night.

Crosby seems to be in a predicament now though. He will soon pass Rick Middleton in scoring, taking him off of the number 87. He will have to find some other way to connect with the number.

He’s highly unlikely to finish with 800 goals and 700 assists, so cross that one out. Maybe he could finish at 8th all-time in goals and 7th all-time in assists? This is a fruitless cause, because we know that the true connection will appear when we least suspect it.

For our final thought, we would like to officially request that the NHL institute a “Summer Classic” game in honour of Sidney Crosby on August 7th every year.
