Rob Gronkowski and Alex Ovechkin are both tied to the number 69, but for very different reasons.

In Gronk's case, 69 is easily his favourite number and he's gone out of his way in interviews to make that fact known.

In Ovi's case, however, he has no real relationship with the number other than the fact that it's the number of his equipment bag as opposed to his jersey number (8).

Obviously it's a little odd that 8 isn't what the Capitals use for Ovechkin's equipment bag, but there's a very good reason they don't:

Makes sense, right?  Obviously the hockey world now knows what bag is Ovi's, but we imagine security has tightened ever since some gear was stolen.

The Capitals could have chosen any number other than 8 for the bag, but they settled on 69 and the choice makes sense when you consider only two players have ever worn the number, Mel Angelstad and Andrew Desjardins.

Ovi is now the unofficial third member of that group thanks to the number choice for his equipment bag.
