Karl Alzner likely just received a happy birthday wish unlike any he has experienced before.

The defenceman turned 29 on Sunday and the word spread as a result of an awkward video the Montreal Canadiens shared of him on social media. Alzner was signed by the Canadiens to a five-year  $23.125 million contract this past offseason, and the historic franchise wanted to make their new prized defenceman feel special on his big day. So, the team really thought outside of the box and produced an extremely awkward video of the Burnaby native dancing to ‘Celebration’ by Kool & The Gang.

Thug Life!

Wish we could say Alzner’s dance moves are as good as his skating on the ice, but we’d be lying if we did. His attempt at the shimmy was really something else…

The 2007 5th overall pick has scored just 19 goals in 591 games, so it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing these dances performed after a goal any time soon. Good on the guy for agreeing to participate and let the team’s fans get to know his humorous side, however, we’re sure some of them cringed as they watched.

We certainly wouldn’t blame them if they did either…

Happy birthday, Karl.
