A shocking play in an Australia Rugby Union under-19 player match has led to a youth player receiving a 10-year ban.

Last weekend during a Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union grand final match, Mark Meafua was sent off after receiving a red card for elbowing an opposing player. Immediately after the sending off, Meafua reacted violently, shoving the referee to the ground.

Following the incident, Meafua was arrested at his home and charged with assault. At a judiciary hearing held by Australian Rugby Union officials, Meafue was given a 10-year ban for physically abusing the referee.

Speaking with The Melbourne Herald Sun, NHRU's general manager Andy Fairfull condemned the young player's actions, while underlining the importance of offering support to Meafua during his ban.

“It is unacceptable to verbally or physically abuse a referee. The sanctions show that if you undertake that behaviour, you will be out of the game for a serious amount of time. “But, as well as ensuring Nik’s well being, the union has an obligation to provide Mark with the appropriate support. Within that 10 years, the referee’s association and Maitland club will work the young man to assist in some rehabilitation.”
