Sport fans are die-hard loyalists, and they don’t pull any punches when it comes to rival sports teams. Football particularly stands out as a sport of high-stakes competition. Through the one-game elimination, the fact that six of 16 total games each season come against the same three divisional foes, and the hard-hitting nature of the sport all contribute to the dedicated fandom seen across football and the NFL.

Following Sunday’s Championship Weekend, a long suffering Philadelphia Eagles franchise advanced where they will meet the league’s dynasty team in the New England Patriots.

While Philadelphia and Boston celebrated, as well as the team’s fans that are peppered around the rest of the world, lots of cities and fans looked on in envy. New York fans, on the other hand, were met with a little more outrage following Sunday night’s football conclusions.

The Empire State Building is one of the most iconic images of New York that there is, and on Sunday it was the source of some outrage from New Yorkers when officials decided to light up the towering building with green and white on one side, as well as blue and red on the other – the colours of the two remaining NFL teams.

Some say that this could be a reflection of the two New York teams, the Giants (who have the same colours as the Patriots) and the Jets (who wear a similar green as the Eagles), but the sheer timing of the light display suggests that it was done in response to the Patriots-Eagles Super Bowl appearances.

Sometimes fans are forced to cheer for other teams once theirs has been eliminated, even Toronto mayor John Tory mentioned that Maple Leafs fans should cheer for Canada’s remaining team (the bitter Leafs’ rival, the Ottawa Senators) to make a charge for the cup. It’s one thing to say where your consolation allegiance lies, but it would be another to hang Senators banners from the CN Tower following the Leafs’ elimination.
