The New Orleans Pelicans completed a historic sweep of the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night, becoming the first 6-seed to sweep a 3-seed since 2001, back when the NBA’s playoff format was a best-of-5 series.

Anthony Davis finished with 47 points and breakout guard Jrue Holiday had 41, but who did Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry thank in the opening statement of his postgame press conference? None other than Kobe Bryant, of course.

Apparently, Holiday was wearing a pair of Nike Kobe 1’s, and Gentry decided to credit his choice in footwear for a pivotal play in the game:

Right, so it all seems to be in good humour, because a pair of shoes doesn’t make a 41-point performance, or force consistent defensive stops against Damian Lillard. Kobe was into it, though:

The original pair of Kobe 1’s was released in 2005, but are being sold again as part of the revamped ‘Protro’ line.
