Last night was a historic one for the Washington Capitals.

The team took care of business with a 5-2 road win over the Vancouver Cancucks and a couple of their players reached significant milestones along the way. Star centre Nicklas Backstrom entered the game with 598 assists and managed to reach the big 6-0-0 with a pair of apples, becoming just the 87th player to accomplish the feat. Incredibly, 284 of them have come on goals scored by Alexander Ovechkin (39%).

Speaking of that Ovi guy, he managed to make a little noise himself. Backstrom’s 600th assist happened to come on the Russian’s 233rd power-play goal, which gave him sole possession of ninth place on the NHL’s all-time list. He now trails Dave Andreychuk, who leads the pack with 274.

You’ve got to think he’s going to surpass that number at some point!

Through eight games, the Caps sit tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for most goals for with 34, a ridiculous 4.25 per game. With a league best 38.7% power-play percentage, we have a feeling these two won’t be slowing down any time soon.
