It seems like we’re seeing the move more and more often now, so obviously, there has also been a heated debate over what the move is actually called. Is it the lacrosse-style goal, or the Michigan?

For the final word, we turn to Andrei Svechnikov, the first and to this date only to successfully pull off the move in an NHL game.

Well, whatever Svech calls it, that’s what we’re going to call it — at least until somebody else scores the move in an NHL game and says otherwise. (No, we’re not going to call it ‘The Svech.’)

Eagle-eyed viewers of Sunday’s Carolina Hurricanes game may also have noticed that Svechnikov tried the Michigan again, but the Tampa Bay Lightning were able to shut it down.

Still, Sunday was a banner day for the Michigan. We had our eyes peeled to see if noted Michigan artist Nils Hoglander would try the move again during Sweden’s bronze medal game at the World Juniors — he didn’t — but we still saw the move twice from other sources: Evgeni Oksentyuk of the OHL’s Flint Firebirds, as well as a ridiculously talented bantam hockey player.
