The Jimmy Butler saga in Minnesota has seen many twists and turns, ranging from tantrums and takeovers in practice to Butler sitting out some recent games to preserve his health, but the one constant has been Butler’s willingness to speak freely about his grievances with the team’s management, coaches and players.

On Saturday, Butler was finally granted his trade request and traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, it appeared that Friday’s game against the Sacramento Kings was something of a last straw between Butler and the Wolves.

What happened on Friday? Well, Butler played 41 minutes and Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau has a well-known tendency to play his starters heavy minutes. Shortly before reports of Butler’s trade began circulating on Saturday, The Athletic’s Sam Amick shared some rather candid thoughts from Butler on his coach’s rotations.

Considering that many basketball players have advocated for shortening the 82-game season and that even many coaches have taken to the practice of resting players, all in the name of preserving long-term health, it can be understood why Butler isn’t a fan of Thibodeau’s style.

Either way, Butler will have a new coach in Brett Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers, and Brown is generally regarded as one of the more forward-thinking coaches in the NBA. Joining a core that already boasts Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, the Eastern Conference likely just got a lot tougher.
