Just when you think you’ve seen it all, eh?

The World Juniors is all about seeing prospects, often on the big stage for the first time in their career. As a result, fans have come to expect the unexpected. Even with that mindset, this bizarre sequence that transpired during the Switzerland/Russia match has got to be a first in the history of the game.

Switzerland was somehow awarded two penalty shots on the same play. Yup, you read that right. Two consecutive penalty shots after Marco Lehmann, who scored twice already ahead of this wild sequence, gets taken down twice on the same breakaway by Russian defender Dmitri Samorukov.

Unfortunately for the Swiss, they were unable to capitalize on the golden opportunities and missed both penalties to leave the game tied.

To boot, three minutes later Russia’s Ivan Muranov received a 5-minute major for spearing. Not the way Russia was looking to end the 2nd period!

You never know what you’re going to see at the World Juniors…
