During the Stanley Cup Final, we received tragic news out of the Columbus Blue Jackets camp. While in the midst of a July 4th celebration, Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks was fatally struck by a firework. Kivlenieks was just 24 years old.

Since the news emerged, an outpouring of support has rolled in from every nook and cranny of the hockey world. Players, team, and fans all gathered together to remember the young Latvian goalie, and his passing is sure to leave a scar for years to come.

On Monday, the Jackets announced that they would be setting up a memorial fund to benefit youth hockey initiatives in both Columbus and Kivlenieks native Latvia. Fans are encouraged to donate to the fund, and all donations will be matched by the team up to $80,000 – a nod to Kivlenieks #80 jersey.

While Kivlenieks sudden passing is a tragedy nobody would wish upon the a young player, it’s nice to see the hockey world rally in dark times. Now, in memory of Kivi, young hockey players may get that much closer to achieving their dreams in the sport.
