Starting pitchers usually like to get an inning done and over with in around 15-20 pitches. If they are able to do so effectively, they are often able to last until later in the game and allow their bullpen to rest up. That's why batters are praised when they are able to take a pitchers deep into at-bats. Even if they end up striking out, their efforts to ware out a pitchers arm are appreciated.

You can imagine the love Brandon Belt got when he strolled back into the dugout after lining out to right field. He managed to set a new record of the modern era, taking Jamie Barria 21 pitches deep.

It's impressive on both sides of the exchange. It is very difficult to throw 21 pitches with only three recording as balls, and it's equally as difficult to make contact on that many swings.

After the impressive showing, Barria and Belt's nights went in very different directions. Barria only managed to last two innings before the bullpen call was made, while Belt had three hits, two runs, and a homer.
