The southern United States of America has been combatting cold weather recently, and in places like Charlotte, North Carolina, the frigid temperatures and snowfall forced a state of an emergency to be called by the Governor.

The Carolina Hurricanes minor league affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, sold out all 8,341 seats at Bojangles’ Stadium during a 1950’s promo night that had over 7,000 hot dogs sold for $1 each on Tuesday night.

One night later, fans were told they wouldn’t be allowed to attend the Checkers game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers due to the severe weather conditions in Charlotte. Since Wednesday morning, 3.5 inches of snow caused the Southern city to essentially shut down.

The Checkers social media team had some fun with the fact that spectators were absent from taking in the game.

Schools and government offices were also closed. Because of travel costs that would require to send the Tigers back to Charlotte at a later date, the AHL and the Checkers organization made a decision early Wednesday morning to play the game without a crowd.

This isn’t the first time the Checkers have played a game without fans. During the 2015/16 season, the club faced the Chicago Wolves with nobody in the stands because of icy conditions outside.

Some AHL teams decided to poke fun at the Checkers, sighting the snowfall was a rather small amount compared to what Laval, Quebec, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and Milwaukee, Wisconsin received.

This reminded us of when the Orioles and White Sox had to play a game without fans during the 2014 season because of protests close to Camden Yards in Baltimore.

Charlotte fans will have the chance to return to Bojangles Stadium and purchase those $1 hot dogs when they face the Rochester Americans on Saturday and Sunday.

Fans that purchased tickets to the game are allowded to exchange their tickets for an upcoming game.
