Playoff hockey can go well beyond three periods and on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, hockey fans were reminded of that fact.

Although there weren't any NHL playoff games happening, there were AHL playoff games going on and there was one that stood out above the rest as it went to a fifth overtime and became the longest game in AHL history.

Game 3 between the Charlotte Checkers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms needed five overtimes to decide a winner and in the end, the Phantoms won it to take a 3-1 series lead.

The other story of the game (aside from the fact that it was the longest game in AHL history) was goaltender Alex Lyon, who made 94 saves for the Phantoms in the win.

You'd think that number of saves would be a record, but Michael Leighton made 98 saves in a 5OT game back in 2008 for Albany.  He was on the losing end of that game, though.

The 94 saves for Lyon would have set an NHL record, though, as the current record for a single game is 80 held by Sam LoPresti.
