Dirk Nowitzki went out in true Disco Dirk fashion as he let Dwyane Wade hog the spotlight with a farewell tour during his final season and waited until the 2018-19 campaign was nearly over to announce his retirement plans.

It’s going to be strange when the Dallas Mavericks take to the hardwood next season as it will be the first time since the 1997-98 season that the franchise’s greatest player will not be in the lineup. However, his name is still going to come out of the mouths of Mavs fans on game days for many years to come if a recent proposal gets approved.

According to Eddie Sefko of mavs.com, Dallas city council members are preparing to rename a portion of Olive Street that runs in front of American Airlines Center to Nowitzki Way.

The street name change request has been proposed and will be submitted to the City Plan Commission on June 6, according to Sefko. If it goes through, the change can happen as soon as September 25, just in time for the 2019-20 season.

“If they rename the street after me, that would be a great honor,” Nowitzki told Sefko. “Many great athletes have played in that arena, so I’m not sure I deserve all that.”

You can bet whenever the greatest player in Mavericks franchise history makes his return to the American Airlines Center he’s going to be met with an extremely loud and lengthy ovation.
