Athletes are some of the most generous millionaires around, but even among a group that consistently gives back to charity, some gestures stand out more than others.

Cole Hamels has lived in Missouri for some time, but since joining the Texas Rangers, he and his wife have decided to make Texas their personal home. So, they have no need for the $9.75 million mansion that they still owned in Southwest Missouri, so they decided to donate it to charity.

They donated their 32,000 square foot home on over 100 acres of land to Camp Barnabas, a camp for children with special needs and chronic illnesses.

Hamels explained his decision on the Camp Barnabas website:

“There are tons of amazing charities in Southwest Missouri. Out of all of these, Barnabas really pulled on our heartstrings,” says Cole Hamels. “Seeing the faces, hearing the laughter, reading the stories of the kids they serve; there is truly nothing like it. Barnabas makes dreams come true, and we felt called to help them in a big way.”

This is one of the more generous acts we’ve seen in sports history and it is certainly the most generous in this charity’s history. The gift is the largest donation in Camp Barnabas history and the CDO of the company stated the difference it will make in the years to come.

“This is so much more than a beautiful property. This incredible gift allows us to further our ministry and truly change thousands of lives for years to come.”
