Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Maradona are unanimously referred to as two of the greatest player to ever lace up the cleats. Earlier this year, Ronaldo, a Portuguese striker, had a bust unveiled in the Madeira Islands and it instantly went viral for all the wrong reasons. Basically, it looked like a cartoonish caricature of the soccer legend that had been hit by a bus.

As is the nature of the internet, the failed tribute quickly became subject to a ton of cyber ridicule.

You’d think that if you were an artist left in charge of creating soccer greats, you would be extra careful after this debacle. But here we are yet again, watching an awkward ceremony unveil a weird looking soccer statue. The victim of the month is Diego Maradona.

To make things just a little more awkward, Maradona himself presses the button to unveil the laughable imitation. A curtain coloured to look like the Argentine national flag opens comically slow as the full-body Maradona figure is revealed holding the World Cup trophy.

Even Maradona had a laugh.

The world of soccer should maybe go on hiatus with these statues for a little while, the artists may need a little practice. Hopefully Maradona will have a redo statue the same was Ronaldo did.
