Hockey will be hearing a lot less of one of it’s most significant voices. After half a century of broadcasting hockey, the legendary Doc Emrick has decided to retire.

Emrick announced his decision on Monday after what was undoubtedly one of the strangest seasons in all those that he’s called. His retirement was met with a massive wave of support from hockey fans everywhere.

As part of the resulting media requests, Emrick joined NHL Tonight the Dan Patrick Show to discuss his gratitude towards NBC for allowing him to continue broadcasting from home, as well as the timing and reasoning for his decision.

It must have been tough to finish off your career knowing the decision was coming, but maintaining the professionalism to continue to leave the spotlight on the players and the game. He did so immaculately, as has come to be the norm with one of hockey’s greatest voices.
