With civil unrest flaring up across the world following the death of George Floyd, it’s affected everyone differently. For some it’s been hugely educational, for others… well… they may just be irritated at all the attention being given.

It’s also made it’s way into different worlds in very unique ways. For hockey, issues around race have long tarnished the sport. It is by far the least racially diverse of major North American sports, and you can essentially count all the players of colour in the NHL in your head.

One guy that’s been around the hockey world a long time is former NHL goaltender Kevin Weekes. Debuting for the Florida Panthers during the 1997-98 season, Weekes went on to play for the Vancouver Canucks, the New York Islanders, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Carolina Hurricanes, the New York Rangers, and the New Jersey Devils before officially hanging them up ahead of the 2009-10 season.

It’s safe to say he’s seen a lot of different hockey climates, so when a fan responded to him in a racially insensitive tweet, Weekes delivered a perfect response, seeming to recount personal racially-charged experiences he’s had in the game of hockey.

While the conversation is roaring all over the world right now, it’s important to ensure that actual change comes. It looks like the hockey world is finally starting to come around to this mindset.
