Every professional sports league is in a very uncomfortable situation. First and foremost, player safety takes complete priority and no one is questioning that. But with everything in mind... what do to about this season? And the next?!

It's tough to imagine the NHL not finishing the 2019-20 campaign after teams played up to 71 games but if there's no solution in the near-future, that may ultimately be the case. Speaking on ESPN's GetUp!, commissioner Gary Bettman explained how he doesn't expect next season to be compromised in any way. He did note that the league would be willing to play out this season later than usual, but mentioned it must have integrity in its process and respect its history.

The CDC publically recommended there be no events of 50-plus people for the next two months. Many NBA executives and owners believe the best-case-scenario is for the league to resume action in mid-to-late June. That would be a lot of hockey to cram in a short period of time if the same is true for the NHL.

It's unclear exactly when the NHL is thinking of getting back on the ice but it doesn't look to be any time soon. If the rest of the season were to be cancelled, it would be the first time the NHL would not crown a Stanley Cup champ since the lockout in 2005.

This sucks.
