Say what you want about Gary Bettman, you’ve probably at least wanted to boo him at some point during your hockey fandom, but he’s actually a really interesting guy. Sure, he’s had his moments where just about every hockey fan is screaming in rage at him, but through all the turbulence he’s maintained a level of unapologetic consistency.

Bettman joined P.K. Subban’s new Ugly Duck Podcast at the beginning of August to discuss a variety of topics. This stretched from his upbringing, to the NHL’s efforts to combat social injustice, and he also took the time to remember a very special moment for himself as league commissioner – his first Stanley Cup presentations.

Presented in the early 90’s, Bettman remembers handing the Cup over to the Montreal Canadiens, and the New York Rangers the next year. He remembers how special it was, and what inspired him about those presentations before he even became commissioner.

The conversation comes at approximately 35:17 of the video:

Once again, we understand Bettman may not be your favourite person in the world. Even so, it’s always interesting to hear the behind the scenes from a guy that’s been in charge of professional hockey in North America for what seems like ever.
