We first saw it a couple years ago, but goalies still decide to use one particular technique that would be frowned upon by many. If they see a chance developing against them, particularly a breakaway or – in this case – a 2-on-0, they take the easy way out.

The move is simple – knock the net out of place, causing an automatic whistle.

It doesn’t get the goalie off scott-free of course, it does cost the team a penalty. The goalie apparently decides that they are more likely to hold off a powerplay than they are to stop the breakaway. Some would call it the coward’s way out.

 

 

Goalie may have been lucky not to get steamrolled by the angry opposition.
