In a few short days, Gerard Gallant will surprisingly be coaching in the Stanley Cup Final.

After leading the Vegas Golden Knights to a Pacific Division title, the team will now face either the Tampa Bay Lightning or Washington Capitals in the Final round. But before Gallant made his way to Vegas, he was involved in an unfortunate situation with the Florida Panthers.

Gallant had previously held bench duties for the team but was relieved following a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on November 27, 2016. After the announcement, pictures were revealed of him taking a taxi to a Carolina airport with his luggage. Gallant led the Panthers to a playoff berth the year before and fans questioned whether the decision should have been made then or when the team returned back to Florida. Following last night’s win, tons of jokes were made on Twitter about the decision.

Gallant, of course, isn’t the only jewel Vegas was able to capture from Florida. Two of the team’s best players, forwards Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith, were both exposed in the expansion draft. They have combined for 34 points in Vegas’ 15 playoff games and have been unstoppable so far.

If Vegas ends up lifting the cup, this is going to be a rough, rough offseason for the Panthers.
