The news shocked pretty much everyone in the hockey world, as most fans figured the 27-year-old would re-sign with the New York Islanders. But as the days dwindled down towards Canada Day, it became more and more clear that Tavares would be on the move, and at last, he pulled the trigger and went with his gut.

Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly joined TSN’s hockey panel via telephone to discuss the signing and revealed the surprising source that informed him on the news.

Odog has been all over the Tavares sweepstakes and even came up with his own way to settle the decision, insisting that it should have been done Bachelor style with James Duthie as the host.

Rielly isn’t the first player who got rocked with some big news in an unlikely way. Arizona Coyotes forward Alex Galchenyuk was boarding a connecting flight to Italy when he found out he was traded from the Montreal Canadiens.

It’s always hilarious finding out about players discovering news in a bizarre way. We can only imagine what Rielly’s face looked like after hearing of the news.
