The NBA Slam Dunk Contest made its debut back in 1984 at the NBA All-Star Game in Denver, Colorado, and it was won by Phoenix Suns forward Larry Nance.

On Saturday night, Nance’s son, Larry Nance Jr., competed in the Slam Dunk Contest in Los Angeles and he made his father very proud with an incredible tribute during the opening round of the competition.

Instead of throwing down one of his slams in his new Cleveland Cavaliers uniform, the former Los Angeles Laker made a costume change at centre court and came out from behind the curtain in his father’s old Phoenix Suns gear.

However, he didn’t stop at the costume change, though, as he also went on to recreate his father’s dunk that from the very first Slam Dunk Contest moments later.

Nance Jr. ended up falling short in the final round against Donovan Mitchell, who edged him 48-47, but we’re guessing he’ll follow in his father’s footsteps and add a Slam Dunk Contest trophy to his collection before his career is all said and done.
