The clock is ticking for William Nylander to sign a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After back-to back 61 point campaigns with the big club, Nylander remains a free agent with less than two months to go until puck-drop. The Swede seemed to be on track for inking a new deal, but the signing of superstar John Tavares has thrown a bit of a wrench into things. Nylander’s teammate and friend Nazem Kadri spoke about the 22-year-old’s contract situation and remained confident that he’ll earn a new deal (at least somewhere) in the near future.

Fans responded with an array of tweets:

Whereas Nylander is in need of a new contract sooner than later, his line-mate Auston Matthews is also eligible for a new deal. With another year left on his contract, though, Matthews made it clear that he’s not in as big of a rush to get a deal done.

One thing that Nylander did make clear is that he’s looking for a long-term deal. But with Matthews and Mitch Marner both due new contracts next season, things might get a little sticky.

Nylander on contract talks with Leafs: 'I want long term'

Time will tell how things play out.
