Lou Lamoriello has no hard feelings towards the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After being released from the team following a second consecutive first round exit in the postseason, the long-time GM took his talents to New York where he assumed duties as the new boss for the Islanders. But ironically enough, his best player, coveted centre John Tavares, left for the Buds before the two could even grab a cup of coffee.

In an interview with NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger, Lamoriello addressed both the Tavares signing and Toronto’s decision to appoint Dubas as the team’s new general manager. The 75-year-old revealed that he has nothing but respect for each move. On Tavares, he said:

The following is an excerpt from NHL.com

"In my dealings with John, he proved himself to be a sincere, honest young man," Lamoriello said in a phone interview. "He earned the right to test free agency, and that's what he did.

"I don't specifically know the reasons for John's decision, but you have to respect his right to make it. I certainly respect him."

Later in the interview, he touched on Dubas’ promotion.

The following is an excerpt from NHL.com

"I think Mark and Kyle were ready as far as leadership goes," Lamoriello said. "It was [Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan's] decision. As for my relationship with Kyle, there was never an issue. He remains a good friend."

At this stage in his career, it’s tough for Lamoriello to be salty about anything. The American already has three Stanley Cups under his belt (all of which were won with the New Jersey Devils), and could be embarking on his last job in the National Hockey League. His next task, though, will likely be his toughest, as the Islanders are arguably the furthest away from winning a championship in the entire league.
