Ian Scott was probably a little disappointed when he heard his goal attempt smack off the scoreboard just two days before Friday’s game against the Tri-City Americans. It’s not very often that a goaltender finds himself in a situation for a little glory.

First you need to be winning the game, but only by a small enough margin that the other team decides it’s worth it to pull the goalie. Then you need to find a chance to actually set up and release a shot, which is not quite as easy when you’re wearing goaltending equipment. Finally, you have to be able to clear the entire team and still maintain the accuracy to squeeze it into the 6ft-wide cage.

Oh, and if you miss it costs your team an icing.

So needless to say, it would be disappointing to see your attempt smack off the scoreboard before it even had a chance. But the Maple Leafs prospect didn’t wait around and mope for too long about it.

Maybe that will satisfy his goal scoring thirst, or maybe it will just add to his prowess. Goaltender goals are seemingly becoming more common these days. We just saw one the other day from Penguins’ third-stringer Tristan Jarry in the AHL.

Forget Martin Brodeur being a 3rd defenceman, these goalies are striving for a 4th forward role!
