The Colorado Avalanche were able to accomplish the unlikely on Saturday night, upending the Calgary Flames to complete a first-round upset of the regular season’s best in the West.

This one will be a tough loss for the Flames to process, of course, but Flames captain Mark Giordano also offered some very high praise for Nathan MacKinnon, comparing him to two of the game’s current greats.

Not bad company to be in at all! MacKinnon fell just short of joining McDavid and Crosby in the 100-point club, finishing with 99 points on the season, but there’s no denying that he’s an elite player in this league.

Things won’t get any easier from here on out for the Avs, who will face either the Sharks or the Golden Knights in the next round, but you’re always giving yourself a shot when you have MacKinnon leading the way.

As for the Flames, well, let’s just that this one will be a long summer for them.
