Matt Kuchar is the talk of the golf world for all of the wrong reasons.  Last November, the 40-year-old took home just over $1.2 million for winning the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico.

You're probably wondering why so many people are talking about Kuchar's win in 2018 now and it's because he paid his caddie a ridiculously low amount of money after the victory.

Yes, that's real.  Kuchar paid his caddie $5,000 after winning more than $1.2 million.  There are a ton of layers to this story.  For starters, the caddie was a replacement caddie by the name of David Giral Ortiz.

According to Kuchar, as per Golf.com, he told Ortiz how much he would be getting paid before the tournament, to which he agreed to the terms that were outlined.

Kuchar said he told Ortiz he would pay him $1,000 if he missed the cut, $2,000 if he made the cut, $3,000 if he had a top-20 and $4,000 if he had a top-10. “The extra $1,000 was, ‘Thank you — it was a great week.’ Those were the terms. He was in agreement with those terms. That’s where I struggle. I don’t know what happened. Someone must have said, ‘You need much more.’”

Ortiz described his pay as $3,000 for the week, with the $2,000 as a down payment on whatever his bonus turned out to be.

Ortiz, however, wasn't satisfied with just $5,000 (for obvious reasons) after the win and tried to get what he thought was a fair amount from Kuchar, as per GolfDigest.com:

“I am a humble man, who takes care of his family, and works hard. I am reaching out to you to see if you can facilitate me receiving a fair amount for my help with Matt winning $1,296,000," Ortiz wrote in an email obtained by Bamberger to Kuchar's agent, Mark Steinberg. "I am not looking to disparage Matt or give him a bad name. Fair is fair, and I feel like I was taken advantage of by placing my trust in Matt.”

Apparently Kuchar offered Ortiz an additional $15,000 after the fact, but he declined.  Kuchar, meanwhile, defended the payment of $5,000.
The even sadder reality is Ortiz could have made $100,000 as a regular caddie would have been paid the standard commission rate of 10%.
