Since even before Auston Matthews made his way into the NHL he was a prodigy expected to break records. He made that evidently clear right from the get-go with his unforgettable four-goal performance against Ottawa in his first NHL game.

Matthews had a chance to make some NHL history on Wednesday night as he needed just one goal to tie Pavel Bure and Steve Yzerman’s record of 11 straight road games with a goal, but ultimately he came up short.

That got us thinking about other players who have gone streaking in the NHL over the years.

We can almost guarantee you’ve never even heard of Punch Broadbent, the player who holds the record for the longest goal streak.

First of all, elite name. Second, this streak has stood the test of time after over 100 years!

The player who holds the record for most goals scored during a scoring streak as a rookie is Joe Malone, who had, count ’em, 35 goals in a mere 14 games. He also only had two assists during that goal-scoring streak, proving to be a PURE sniper.

As far as it goes for defencemen, the record-holder is a much more recognizable name, as offensive weapon Mike Green set the record back in 2009 with goals in eight straight games.

Matthews came up short from tying an NHL record but it won’t be the last record he’ll challenge in his career.
