The story of the Edmonton Oilers over the past few years is that they have a small amount of really good pieces, and the lack of balance and depth has gone on to waste that. Well, as it turns out, they just needed those pieces to play EVEN BETTER!

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are unquestionably the most talented members of the Edmonton Oilers, with a resurging James Neal likely to dial back the pace a little bit. McDavid and Draisaitl have long been the frontloaded part of the Oilers, but lately they’ve been so good that it’s actually shown up in the standings.

In fact, they’ve only lost one game compared to their six wins. Nobody saw this coming into the year, that’s for sure.

Just how good has the pair’s start been? Well, the two stars alone have a combined 32 points. The rest of the team has a combined 45 points. It’s the best statistical start to a season since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr came out of the gates on fire way back in 1995.

The scariest part is there’s no sign of them slowing down. While defence and goaltending remains somewhat of a fickle situation, the Oilers top line and power-play looks nearly unstoppable.

Could this finally be the year the Oilers put it together?
