While the sports world patiently waits to hit it’s stride once again, it’s been a bit of a content scramble for leagues, teams, players, and… well… us! We’ve seen all sorts of creative ways for content producers to keep sports fans engaged, and one thing has become abundantly clear – some ideas are better than others.

While the MLB’s idea of proposing hypothetical home run derbies and getting fans to vote on who the winner would be isn’t necessarily a bad idea, one particular execution of it didn’t go quite as well as hoped. The players they decided to cast for the roles of opposing sluggers in this make-believe derby were Barry Bonds and Cody Bellinger.

In other words, they chose one of the best baseball players of all-time and the overall leader in home runs vs. a promising young slugger hoping to enter his 4th year in the league.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re not knocking Bellinger. He’s awesome, and he’s coming off an MVP year in which he also won a Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger award. Just to put it into perspective, Bonds is the record-holder for NL MVP honours (7), has won eight Gold Gloves, and 12 Silver Slugger awards – another record.

At the time of this writing, over 31,000 votes were cast and Bonds came in with a whopping 85.5% of them. The tweet came with a  few comments too…

The replies go on and on, but you get the general idea. They certainly paid the price for that one.

To be fair, it's hard to imagine a current MLBer that wouldn't get roasted in a comparison to Barry. Mike Trout? Aaron Judge? Would probably result in the same kind of response.
