It’s always a thrill to watch a goalie courageously leave his crease and jet toward the blue line in an effort to prevent a breakaway from happening. But sometimes, it doesn’t work out too well. That  was particularly true during a NCAA game between the Northeastern University Huskies and Boston University Terriers.

Huskies forward Lincoln Griffin managed to sneak his way behind Terriers defenders and found himself in a footrace with BU goaltender Jake Oettinger. Down three goals late with not a whole lot to lose, Oettinger dove for the puck and missed horribly. To make matters worse, Ty Amonte, the defender who hustled back and attempted to prevent the breakaway form happening, completed a full front flip after colliding with his goaltender. All the players could really do at that point was watch Griffin score in the open net.

That’s pretty much as disastrous as it gets.

Amonte was ruled okay, but the Terriers ultimately suffered a tough 6-1 loss to their adversary. He, of course, wasn’t the first player to have a scary collision with his goaltender, so here are a couple of other instances that also resulted from the goaltender aggresively attempting to play the puck.

For all of the non-goaltenders reading this, hopefully this gave you an idea of how courageous of a play it is for a netminder to leave his crease and prevent breakaway. This one may not have worked out so well, but Oettinger and Amonte still deserves credit for the play.
