Anytime you hear “passes Wayne Gretzky,” you know you’re in for a treat.

While the hockey world waits with bated breath as Alex Ovechkin attempts to close the gap between him and Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, he did manage to pass The Great One in another category. While it’s not quite as flashing as the simple “G” coloumn, Ovi’s multi-goal game against the Ottawa Senators on Monday marked the 84th time he’s lit the lamp multiple times in the same road game.

His goals proved to be pretty significant, as well! With the Caps and Sens tied up 4-4, Ovi was sprung on a breakaway on which he made no mistake, giving the Caps a lead towards the end of the 2nd period. The Sens would get close, but they would not be able to tie it up again. After T.J. Oshie and Drake Batherson traded hat-trick goals, Ovi secured the W with the Caps’ 7th goal of the night.

Ovi is now up to SEVEN goals in just six games so far this year, and the shot at Gretzky’s mark certainly isn’t lost on anyone watching the Russian star find twine this season. His career total is now 737, which is 157 goals short of Gretzky’s total of 894.

What a career Ovi has had thus far, and there’s no sign of the 36-year-old slowing down yet.
