When you looked at the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning entering the playoffs, you were looking at two very different teams. The Habs, a benefactor of the one-off 2021 playoff format, were a team that wasn’t expected to make it very far. The Bolts, on the other hand, were one of the Cup favourites after star players Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov (controversially) returned.

Despite what many thought, the Habs fought their way through Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vegas to earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Final. The Cinderella run had a lot of fans feeling confident, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau, a known Habs fan, decided to take that confidence and make a friendly wager with U.S. President Joe Biden. At the time, the terms of the bet weren’t known, but it was widely expected to be more than just bragging rights on the line.

As it turns out, there was more on the line that was not originally stated. After the Bolts triumphant Stanley Cup victory, Trudeau shared a follow-up tweet to Biden informing him that some Montreal smoked meat sandwiches were on the way.

While Biden could have taken the moment to rub in the victory a bit, the democrat instead expressed appreciation for the follow-through and, of course, congratulated the Bolts once again. After all, he’ll be enjoying some of the best smoked meat sandwiches in the world because of Tampa!
